Finding Fractions

Finding fractions
LI: To work out the fraction of a quantity.

a)  At a fancy dress party ¼  of the 80 people had costumes. Show how to work out how many people had costumes at the party.
          ¼ of 80 = 20

          80 ÷ 4 = 20

20 x 10 = 20
Answer: 20
b)  ⅔  of the class of 24 students owned cell phones. Show how to work out how many students in the class owned cell phones.
⅔ of 24 = 16
24 ÷ 3 = 8
8 x 2 = 16
Answer: 16
c)   There are 180 students. 6/10  of them walk to school. Show how to work out how many students walked to school.
6/10 of 180 = 48
180 ÷ 10 = 18
18 x 6 = 48
Answer: 108
d)  There are 150 students at the school. ⅘ of the students went to the school camp. Show how to work out how many students went to camp.
⅘ of 150 = 120
150 ÷ 5 = 30
30 x 4 = 120
Answer: 120

a)   Hohepa worked in a store for 16 hours a week for 7 weeks over Christmas. Show how to work out how many hours he worked over that time.
16 x 7 = 112
10 x 7 = 70
6 x 7 = 42
70 + 42 = 112

112 hours

b) Paddy worked 14 hours per day as a security guard. He worked for 23 days.
Show how to work out how many hours he worked over that time.
14 x 23 = 212
10 x 20 = 200
4 x 3 = 12
200 + 12 = 212
212 hours

c)   James and Maraea dug 32 post holes per day on their farm. They worked for 27 days. Show how to work out how many post holes they dug.
32 x 27 = 1214
30 x 20 = 1200
2 x 7 = 14
1200 + 14 = 1214
1214 post holes

d) 38 people worked for 195 days in the year. Show how to work out how many days they worked together during the year.
38 x 195 =
30 x 100 = 3000
8 x 95 = 760
3000 + 760 = 3760
3760 days

Number sentences and story problems
LI: To write a number sentence/number story to show we understand the question



A number sentence uses numbers and symbols instead of words.  Number sentences are often used if there is problem to work out.  An example of writing a number sentence from a story problem is shown in the box below.
Example:

Three friends have 59 marbles.  If Tamatea has 12 and Sarah has 28, how many does Bob have? (story problem)

Write a number sentence to show how many marbles Bob has.
59 – 12 – 28 = 19    (number sentence)



Five friends have 6 marbles each.  How many do they have altogether?
(story problem)
Write a number sentence to show how many marbles they all have.   
5 × 6 = 30   (number sentence)

Sione was working out how much money he had.  He started with $482 in the bank, spent $152 on an MP3 player, $50 on DVDs, and $25 on food. Write a number sentence to show how much money Sione has left.
$482 - 152 - 50 - 25 = 255
482-152 = 330
330-50 = 280
280-25 = 255





Max has been working out how many runs in total he has got for his team.  So far he has scored 18, 24, 60, 103, and 25 runs.  Write a number sentence to show how many runs he has scored so far.

18 + 24 = 42
42 + 60 = 102
102 + 103 = 205
205 + 25 = 230
Awhina had 640 marbles.  She decided to give them away to her family.  She gave 90 to her younger sister, 80 to her brother, 30 to her mother and 50 to her father. Write a number sentence to show how many marbles Awhina had left.
640 - 90 = 550
550 - 80 =
Mere went shopping for Easter eggs.  She bought 7 packets of 5 eggs. Write a number sentence to show how many Easter eggs Mere bought altogether.





Maraea was training for a swimming race.  For the first 3 days she swam for 2 hours a day. For the next 3 days she swam for 5 hours a day. Write a number sentence to show how many hours she swam over the 6 days.




Hamish gave away all his old Dragonball Z cards.  He had 28 cards and shared them equally between his 7 friends. Write a number sentence to show how many cards they get each.
